upcoming show

Friday September 14th, 2007 at 8pm
Koen Holtkamp and Shelley Burgon
Issue Project Room 232 3rd Street, 3rd Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11215

Koen Holtkamp co-founded the apestaartje collective/label in 1998 while studying at The Art Institute of Chicago. Since then the label has relocated to Brooklyn and released CDs from artists from Japan, Germany, Austria, Australia, France, and the US. Holtkamp has released two solo albums as Aero and two albums as Mountains, a duo project with Brendon Anderegg. He has toured throughout the US and Europe performing everywhere from festivals, art galleries, and museums to basements, hippie communes, churches, and rock clubs. Holtkamp has performed with Tony Conrad, Greg Davis, Minamo, Tape, Nicholas Collins, Supersilent, Alog, etc. He has also been included in several exhibitions, most notably at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His current solo performances utilize acoustic instruments and objects played through a series of both analog and digital electronics to create an extremely gradual and hypnotic listening experience. 'Field Rituals', his first solo album under his own name will be released by UK based Type records in early 2008.

Utilizing the sounds of the harp, birds and other surprising creatures, Shelley Burgon will venture once again into the world of spatialized, real-time live processing and will collaborate with the visual artist Rachel Wood Salley in what will be Shelley Burgon's third piece for Stephan Moore's 16-channel hemispherical speaker system at Issue Project Room.

Shelley Burgon lives in Brooklyn and plays harp and computer in the avant-chamber ensemble Ne(x)tworks and the avant-rock band Stars Like Fleas. Her duo with bassist Trevor Dunn recently released a full-length, improvised, live record for Skirl Records titled Baltimore. In September 2007 Stars Like Fleas will release their highly anticipated second album for Talitres titled The Ken Burns Effect. For the 2008-2009 season Shelley will join seven other stellar musicians in a collaboration with the legendary Merce Cunningham Dance Company as part of the Dia: Beacon Events series. Shelley has spent many years improvising in and around New York City and has had the pleasure to play and record with many legendary people associated with the vibrant New York downtown scene. Currently she is working on two records, one of original chamber music and one of new songs in which she will be playing a variety of instruments.

collin olan : rec01 exhibiting at the warehouse gallery

embracing winter - janet morton, bruno munari, takeshi murata, collin olan, lisa m. robinson, and rudy shepherd
Staging the coldest season as a playground for imagination, The Warehouse Gallery presents Embracing Winter, a group exhibition featuring knitted sculpture, psychedelic video, interactive displays, sly photography, and crisp audio and book works by American, Canadian and Italian artists.

As technology advances, our concept of physical comfort becomes increasingly narrow and artificially mediated. We can program thermostats to the degree, swim in heated pools in the winter, and ice skate in tropical regions. We prefer to encounter the seasons as an aesthetic experience, when convenient, within the self-created myth of a weatherless society.

Syracuse is the perennial winner of the Golden Snowball Award, for the most snowfall in New York State. Embracing Winter celebrates this crystallized precipitation as the key to a delightful set of activities, and as an ephemeral filter to make ordinary surroundings new again.

Embracing Winter

13 Feb - 31 March 2007 / Tues - Sat, 10am - 6pm / Hot Cocoa Reception: Thu. Feb 15, 5-8 pm

Artists: Janet Morton / Bruno Munari / Takeshi Murata/ Collin Olan / Lisa M. Robinson / Rudy Shepherd

The Father's Heart Ministries
The Father's Heart Ministries is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization located in the East Village on the Lower East Side in Manhattan—where countless individuals struggle to make ends meet in the face of an increasingly expensive and gentrified atmosphere. The Father's Heart Ministries is dedicated to restoring dignity and an improved quality of life to the many low-income (working poor), homeless, and immigrant individuals in our community. In our efforts to support those in need and to reduce hunger, we run a food pantry and soup kitchen where hundreds of children and adults are fed hot meals on a weekly basis. In addition, we provide free ESL and Parenting classes, job opportunities for neighborhood youth at our ice cream store, and referrals to appropriate social services in hopes of enabling individuals to move towards self-sufficiency.

Helen Ross McNabb Friendship House
We are a non-profit community center for adults with severe and persistent mental illness. We serve individuals throughout our community regardless of illness or socio-economic background. We see 60 different people on average daily. All staff are also mentally ill. We host member and community led education, support groups, and community service.
